I saw Shelbyville
Community Theatre's production of "Fiddler on the Roof" last night. I wish
I could encourage you to go see it....BUT all seats are sold out for
tonight and tomorrow afternoon. It's a shame too, because you have missed
an outstanding performance.
I came away overwhelmed at what Lora Norris, director, and her crew had
managed to accomplish on a small stage (and with what I know from
experience is non-existent back stage space). I do not consider myself
(with no singing ability) qualified to adequately judge a musical.....but
let it be said, that I go often to the Broadway shows at Murat, and what I
saw last night could hold up to almost all I have seen there.
Where to begin? I have no clue. The small on-stage orchestra was wonderful
without being distracting. The choreography was great, especially given
the limited space for all that dancing around. The set was extremely well
done, and scene changes were made quickly with minimum notice. What a
great crew!
There were so many people who deserve to be recognized, but again, where
to begin?
There were around 40 people involved in this production, and they all
earned my applause. I normally think of Yenta, the matchmaker,as being an
old woman like me, but she was played flawlessly by a MUCH younger Hollie
Norris. I could not have held a candle to her.
I loved the voices and performances of the three older daughters played by
Claire Hawkins, Kelcie Tribby, and Angie Forchee, as well as their love
interests: Cary Nigh, John Pittman, and (I think) Mike Evans. Correct me
on the latter if I am wrong.....
And Lindy Meyer as Tevye.....wow, incredible voice and stage presence. His
"Do You Love Me?" sung to his wife Golde (Cecilia Hawkins) was especially
impressive.
If you have not made a reservation for one of these last performances,
please accept my condolences. You are missing out on an extremely well
done musical!
